I am officially hooked on making my own patterns now, though most emerge from common patterns and stitches. The one following is based on the basic linen stitch, knitted in round. Most use this stitch for heels of socks, but I found that they make durable, if less stretch mittens. These are ones definitely babies, 1 years old (or less). They measure about 4″ in palm width.

Linen Fingerless Mits

You’ll need:

  • 4 size- 7 double-pointed needles (dpn)
  • Sport yarn – I did not measure yardage used but it definitely used than half of your average yarn ball
  • yarn placeholder (can be some scrap piece of yarn)

To Start:

  • CO 12sts, 10sts and 10 sts on 3 dpns respectively
  • Join in the round for the next row

For the Cuff:

  • Row 1-10: *k2 p2*

For the Body of the Mitten:

  • Row N (odd): *k1, sl1wif*
  • Row N+1 (even): *sl1wif, k1*

Knit until 6.5cm in total. End on even row.

For the Thumb Gusset:

  • Row M: k1, kfb, sl1wif, k, sl1wif, kfb, *k1, sl1wif* until end of round
  • Row M+1: *sl1wif, k1* until end of round
  • Row M+2: k1, kfb, k1, sl1wif, k1, sl1wif, k1, kfb, *k1, sl1wif* until end of round
  • Row M+3: sl1wif, k1, s1wif, k1, k1, s1wif, k1, k1, sl1wif, k1, *sl1wif, k1* until end of round
  • Row M+4: k1, kfb, k1, k1, sl1wif, k1, sl1wif, k1, k1, kfb, *k1, sl1wif* until end of round
  • Row M+5: *sl1wif, k1* until end of round
  • Row M+6: *k1, sl1wif* until end of round

This will have increased the project by 6 stitches

For the Rest of the Mitten:

  • Move 10 stitches to placeholder
  • Row M+7: *sl1wif, k1*
  • Row M+8: *k1, sl1wif*

Repeat those last two rows until project reaches 10cm in total

Binding Off:

  • *K2tog, move sitch back to left needle* repeat until one stitch remaining on needle
  • Tie off

For the Thumb:

  • pick up 2 more stitches (for a total of 12 stitches)
  • move stitches to dpns – should result in 5-5-2
  • Row 1,3: *k1, sl1wif* to end of round
  • Row 2,4: *sl1wif, k1* to end of round

Binding Off:

  • *K2tog, move sitch back to left needle* repeat until one stitch remaining on needle
  • Tie off

Weave remaining ends into the project

Repeat for the other mitten.

Enjoy!
