2.1 the heist
Lots going on here, but certain few key pieces of information revealed about Mal. (We also get introduced to the dominant force of nature – the Reavers)

- The snappy conversation throughout the heist portrays Mal as someone that steals only from the rich and prefers to do so without impacting the individuals
- The older man unlocking the safe later called them the Browncoats which is a nickname for the Independents (the losing side of the war against the Alliance)

- The dialogue Mal has with the private firm’s security guard shows he does care about individual lives
- But probably most importantly, it is not until now we hear Mal’s name for the first time, yelled by one of his crew members, while they’re off the ship.
- He tries hard to be incognito but fails (flying under Alliance’s radar)
- This is also contradictory to the antagonist in the movie whom we never learn the name of. I’ll refer him as just the Operative from now on
