5. Conclusion

  • Whedon begins the film by portraying Mal as a character who has lost a core part of his identity and is focused only on survival. But then the sequence of events in the film, and through the fulfillment of River’s theme, brings back who Mal really is – someone who believes in both a greater good, and in humanity
  • Dialogue, character interactions and contrasts in characters all contribute heavily to creating Mal as a character, with camera work, music, lighting and setting serving as secondary components that underscores who he is and the world he lives in.
