  • The speech begins before the actual scene as a way to join what they discovered with the crew’s decision drawing gradiations:
    • Retrospection to action
    • Shock and horror to conviction
  • This family meeting happens in the kitchen again, but the nature of the meeting contrasts sharply with the first one where Mal cannot even explain why he brought River back onboard
    • Full circle and even Jayne is swayed by Mal’s conviction and belief of a greater good
    • This is where we finally get to see Mal as a hero and as the volunteer soldier he was in the past
    • No one protests (even Jayne), everyone is now looking up at Mal with admiration and respect
  • The kitchen is nearly flooded with light in an almost dream-like quality that nearly matches River’s dreams that led them to Miranda. The joining of the themes that both Mal and River carries is complete
