2.2 intro to the Reavers and the chase sequence

  • This is the introduction to the movie’s force of nature: the dominant agency
    • Lots of close-ups, camera panning around quickly to several things to build and reflect tension, panic, need for speed and the ensuing chaos with the attack
  • This is another defining moment for Mal as a character as he chooses to abandon the man
    • The camera keeps focusing back on Mal’s reaction nearly throughout – as the guy comes running up, as Mal pushes him away, then as he shoots the man as an act of mercy

  • The chase sequence that ensues paces between the actual chase and cutting back to Serenity
    • Contrary to nearly the exact scenario before with the other man, Mal saves Jayne
    • Again it plays up the portrayal of Mal’s actions of protecting his family as his first priority

  • Another family moment at the end of the chase sequence: Kaylee asking Simon who is obviously her love interest, if he’s okay and Mal asks in a very typical father-jealous-of-boyfriend manner “Is he okay?!”
  • After, the confrontation we witness in the end then comes to a climax as Simon decides they’re getting off the ship.
